Nokia vs Apple - fight, fight, fight Kit of the Year Our choices will be controversial, but for every Register Hardware reader irritated by Apple's command-and-control approach, dozens of phone users don't care so long as their handset delivers a high-quality smartphone experience. And the iPhone 3GS does deliver exactly that. It's not a phone for everyone - but then neither is Nokia's new N900. We like it, though, and all the other top-end touchscreen phones gathered here.

Court Says Personal Email From Work Can Still Be Protected Attorney-Client Commu

We've seen plenty of cases where courts have said that an individual has no expectation of privacy on emails sent from work, and therefore cannot protect those emails. However, in an interesting new ruling (found via the EFF), a court found that personal emails sent from work computers can still be considered privileged and confidential as an attorney-client communication. Of course, there's a bit more to this case that makes the facts a bit different and makes me wonder if it would apply in other circumstances. In this case, it dealt with a federal prosecutor who was fired, and is trying to claim that the firing was for his whistle-blowing. He was trying to access the emails of a US Attorney that he believes will reveal why he was fired. So it wasn't a case of a company trying to review the email (which is normally the case in these types of lawsuits). And, as such, it makes sense. The attorney-client privilege should be seen as one that has an incredibly high barrier. Any weakening of that privilege -- such as by saying that if you email your lawyer from work, it doesn't exist -- would be troubling. But what would be more interesting is what would happen in a lawsuit where it was the employer looking at the material. If a company has a regular program of recording and examining employee email (as many do), then how would the issue be resolved? It would seem that, in such circumstances, it would make a lot less sense to consider the content protected, since the employer is not asking for it, but already has access to it. In related news, however, the Supreme Court will be hearing a case that looks at whether or not your text messages are private, even if sent from company mobile phones.

Under this new legislation "Fetishes are not permitted." That's right folks, if your site has a pic of someone dressed as Princess Leia, then your site will be blocked. If they want to. Obviously this law only applies to people the government doesn't like, or franly they'd have to close down almost all internet access, but this way, if you say something the gov't dislikes, they have a loophole to have you censored with.Democracy sounds like a wonderful idea. We really should try it sometime.I know that it's easy to bypass these 'moral' firewalls if you have the technical know-how, but why on earth should we have to? if children are in such terrible danger from the internet, instead of banning adults from using it, we should just ban the kids! Or (*gasp*) admit that sex, even kinky sex, really isn't that terrible? Also "As the category is restricted to activity between consenting adults, it does not permit any depictions of non-adult persons, including those aged 16 or 17, nor of adult persons who look like they are under 18 years." Now I don't have a problem with blocking depictions of people under the age of consent, but of people who merely look on the youngish side? What if Emma Watson did a sex scene in a movie? It's perfectly legal for her to do so, and for me to watch it, but logically any commercial site advertising that film wouldn't be able to show her so much as topless without being banned. What about Daniel Radcliffe then, he looks young... and did appear naked in Equus. So i can go to a stage show and have a good leer so long i don't watch a segment of it on teh Evil InterWebbs? (not my cuppa tea but you get the idea)I'm trying to find a url for the report but it may not be available to the common folk at this time.

LG expects to sell 3.8 million 3D LCDs by 2011, partners with Korean broadcaster

Well, this sure marks a change of tone for LG. After taking the cautious approach and throwing out a single 3D TV model in 2009, the Korean manufacturer is now boldly predicting sales of 400,000 3D units in 2010 and 3.4 million in 2011. To make it all happen, the company has announced it will introduce a "wide range" of 3D TV sets measuring between 42 and 72 inches diagonally, with flagship models among them. Furthermore, LG's new partnership with SkyLife will see both companies investing in 3D content creation, as the digital satellite broadcaster will be pitching in $25 million. Naturally, this Korean push is merely a prelude to a planned assault on American and European markets next year, which LG expects will jump all over 3D given its internal survey data indicating 58 percent of people want an extra dimension to their viewing experience. What we're most excited about, though, is the "ultra-slim" bezel you see in the picture -- it is no accident or mere prototype, and its minimization is part of LG's effort to maximize immersion. We like it, 3D or not. LG expects to sell 3.8 million 3D LCDs by 2011, partners with Korean broadcaster SkyLife originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 15 Dec 2009 04:19:00 EST.
The worlds first public LTE network was launched in Stockholm, Sweden today. Telia (the Swedish operator) are planning to launch in the 25 biggest cities in Sweden within a year. Only a limited supply of one modem model is available and it only supports 4G, not 3G or earlier, but early customers can switch this modem for a newer one which supports all networks once it has been released. The monthly price is 599 SEK (about $80) for a 12 month contract, but the first half year is free and the modem is included. Current download speeds are around 52 Mbit but will be increased to about 80 Mbit in phase two according to Telia. For more information, check out this article (in Swedish): http://www.e24.se/business/it-och-telekom/telia-forst-i-varlden-med-4g_1745511.e24
